Guilbert and Iscove published their modifications to Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium (DMEM) in 1976. Their modifications included the supplements of selenium, additonal vitamins and amino acids, sodium pyruvate and HEPES buffer. In addition, ferric nitrate was replaced with potassium nitrate. When further supplemented with albumin, lecithin, and transferrin, this medium supported the growth of precursor cells of macrophages and erythocytes without serum supplementation. Iscove's Medium has since been shown to support murine B lymphocytes, hemopoietic tissue from bone marrow, B cells stimulated with lipopolysccharide, T lymphocytes, and a variety of hybrid cells.
